Pintail Lake Wild Game Observation - A game and waterfowl preservation area is located at Pintail Lake two miles north of Show Low. This migratory rest area for duck, geese and other waterfowl, boasts unique grasses and reeds. Depending on the time of the year, several wildlife species can be seen. There are observation platforms in the area for the public's use. Pintail Lake has been a cooperative venture between three levels of government outlined to create a man-made marsh ecosystem using treated wastewater. The Pintail Lake project has become the first of its kind in the Southwestern Region of the USDA Forest Service.

Show Low Lake Country Park - Show Low Lake Country Park contains 100 acres at an elevation of 6,500 feet and is located one mile off State Route 260 in Show Low on Show Low Lake Road. If you are a trout fisherman, early Spring is the recommended season. Other species include walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish. If you enjoy shoreline fishing, Show Low Lake is better than most. There is a small bait shop, with boat rentals and launch. Major improvements are underway for shower, bathroom, walk-in store and an observatory. A great place to take the family.

Fool Hollow State Recreation Park - Fool Hollow State Recreation Park is located three miles northwest of Show Low. The 140 acre lake is nestled amid some of the tallest stands of Ponderosa pine in the nation. Fool Hollow Lake State Recreational Parks offers excellent camping sites for RV's and tents, boat ramps and docks, fishing piers and fish cleaning stations, play areas for children and an amphitheater facing the lake. Fool Hollow Lake attracts many fishermen in search of largemouth and small mouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, black crappies, bluegills and some brown trout. A fishing pier for the handicapped will also be available.

Residents of the White Mountains have access to the Show Low Municipal Airport which has two lighted, paved runways (4,000 feet and 6,500 feet). A commuter airline provides two daily flights.  The Show Low Municipal Airport offers easy access to nearby larger airports for easy access to the beauty of the White Mountains. 

Principal Economic Activities

Tourism and recreation are the foundation of the economy of Show Low. Due to its size and location, the community serves as a regional trade and services center for southern Navajo County and portions of southern Apache County. It is also an entry point for visitors to the White Mountain recreation areas.

Wholesale concerns include lumber companies, concrete plants, and bottled gas firms. Navajo County business offices and regional headquarters and Navapache Regional Medical Center, a regional trauma hospital, are maintained in Show Low.

Most Show Low manufacturing employment is in the forest products industry. Stone Container Forest Industries Paper Mill, Arizona's only pulp and paper mill, is located northwest of Show Low and is the area's largest employer. Show Low also has a molding mill, machine shop and pellet mill. The city, a designated Enterprise Zone as well as an active Main Street City, runs a business incubator area, an industrial park and operated the regional Show Low Municipal Airport. The City has no property tax.

The City of Show Low has a broad range of community facilities including a library, two bowling alleys, an 18-hole golf course, several lighted racquetball and tennis courts, an exercise fitness course, two soccer fields, an archery range, a drive-in theater and many athletic facilities, such as an indoor aquatic center pool, lighted Little League softball and baseball field, handball and basketball court facilities and picnic areas.

Communication - In addition to communication resources from the rest of the State, Show Low has bi-weekly area newspapers, several radio stations, and numerous television channels from Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff via cable, translator and antenna.

Educational - There are five public elementary school, one junior high school , one high school and Northland Pioneer College (NPC). Show Low has a vocational education program offering courses in auto mechanics, general business and graphic arts. NPC has served Navajo County since 1974; transfer programs and occupations programs are available. The State accredited community college has centers in Holbrook, Winslow, Snowflake and Show Low. Northern Arizona University in partnership with NPC offers undergraduate and graduate programs. For information call (520) 537-9601. Show Low also has an accredited cosmetology school in alternating years.

Medical - Navapache Regional Medical Center has 54 beds, there is one nursing home with 100 beds and nine clinics (four chiropractic, five medical). The medical staff includes 41 physicians, five dentists, two ophthalmologists, two orthodontists, four optometrists, four chiropractors and two veterinarians. Ambulance service is provided by Action Medical.

Financial - There are six financial institutions with local offices in Show Low. Several company sponsored credit unions are also available. The Northern Arizona Council of Governments (NACOG) located in Flagstaff services this area with a Revolving Loan Program for new and existing businesses. Inquiries can be made through WMRDC, P.O. Box 3440, Show Low, AZ 85901. The Industrial Development Authority handles information related to industrial development bonds. Inquiries can be made through the office of the Deputy City Manager/City Treasurer. Additionally, Navajo County businesses are eligible for assistance in financing fixed assets through the Finance and Administration Division of the Arizona Department of Commerce.

Governmental - The community is governed by a mayor, six council members, and a city manager. Show Low is a full-service city with police, parks and recreation, water and waste management, and planning and zoning departments. Fire and emergency medical services (EMS) are also available. Airport - The residents of Show Low have access to a local airport which has two lighted, paved runways (4,000 feet unlighted and one 6,500 feet lighted runway). UNICOM radio equipped, repairs, gas and charter service available. There is a commuter airline service to Phoenix three times daily. Show Low Historical Society

"SHOW LOW" ... the commercial and tourism capital of the White Mountains, was established in 1870 and incorporated in 1953. Located in southern Navajo Country at an elevation of 6,331 feet, the city is 174 miles northeast of Phoenix, and 193 miles north of Tucson.
Show Low received its name when CE. Cooley and Marion Clark decided there was not enough room for both of them in their settlement. The two men agreed to let a game of cards decide who was to move. According to the story, Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and replied, "Show Low it is."

The White Mountain Regional Development Corporation (WMRDC) was founded in 1989 as a not-for-profit organization to facilitate economic growth and diversity for the southern Navajo County communities of Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, Snowflake, and Taylor. The WMRDC works closely with the White Mountain Partnership to maintain a regional website for tourism and also a website for economic development and relocation informaiton.

Show Low - Introduction     Situated atop the Mogollon Rim in Eastern Arizona, Show Low is a pleasant mountin town surrounded by national forests. It offers plenty of heavily wooded camping areas, cabins, and fishing lakes. At 6,400 feet its summer temperatures are generally 30 degrees cooler than Phoenix and Tucson. Horseshoe Cienega Lake 121 acres Mountainous Setting
Horseshoe Cienega Lake yielded the state record Brown Trout at 16 lbs. 7 oz. It is located just off the highway between Pinetop and Springerville and is quite popular.

Mexican Hay Lake 164 acres Mountainous Setting
Mexican Hay Lake has a brushy shoreline, is small and weedy. It has yielded some lunkers though, so it may be worth a look.

Sunrise is a large lake located off Hwy 260 between Pinetop and Springerville in the White Mountains. Fish grow to between 15 and 20 inches here and hence is quite popular with fishermen.

Woods Canyon Lake is located along the Mogollon Rim off Hwy 260 about 30 miles east of Payson.

Crescent Lake 130 acres Mountainous Setting
Located at 8.900 feet in the White Mountains is attractive Crescent Lake. Fish here for Rainbows and Brookies.

Lyman Lake 2.5 sq. miles Flat to Hilly Setting
This 1,500-acre reservoir is surrounded by Lyman Lake State Park. Summer days, with temperature highs in the 80's to low 90's, are perfect for fishing, swimming, leisure boating, water-skiing, hiking or just plain relaxing.

Willow Springs Lake 150 acres Mountainous Setting
Willow Springs Lake is located along the Mogollon Rim off Hwy 260 about 30 miles east of Payson. It is near Woods Canyon Lake.


A-1 Lake
This attractive lake holds a fair supply of Rainbows and Brookies. The lake was named after an Apache Chieftan. His name wasn't actually A-1, but the U.S. Army officials couldn't easily promnounce his Apache name, so he was referred to as A-1.
In winter ice fishing is popular due to the relatively easy highway access A-1 enjoys.

Becker Lake

Bunch Lake

Fool Hollow Lake

Show Low Creek flows into Fool Hollow Lake, providing a natural feeding ground for a variety of wildlife and a very diverse fishery. Fishing opportunities are abundant with rainbow trout, brown trout, large and small mouth bass, black crappie, green sunfish, channel catfish and walleye are all present in the lake. Catchable sized rainbow trout are stocked by the Arizona Game and Fish Department mid-May through September.

The tiny town of Adair has long since been covered by the lake, but it was Thomas Westly Adair who was responsible for the name Fool Hollow. In 1885, Adair moved into the area with the intention of farming. The locals joked that only a fool would try and farm the place. The name obviously stuck..

River Reservoir is one of the three "Greer Lakes," located in the White Mountains near the town of Greer. The other Greer Lakes are Bunch Lake and Tunnel Lake.

Show Low lake near the town of Show Low is the lake to choose if you're interested in Walleye. The state record 12 pounder was caught here. The lake also holds Rainbow and Brown trout, Largemouth Bass, Sunfish, and Catfish. At the lake is a bait shop, boat rentals and launch.
The Navajo County Parks and Recreation Department operates campgrounds at the lake.

Sunrise is a large lake located off Hwy 260 between Pinetop and Springerville in the White Mountains. Fish grow to between 15 and 20 inches here and hence is quite popular with fishermen. Fishing from shore or from a small craft are both productive, though be aware it sometimes gets quite windy.
The area has campgrounds, convenience stores, and boat rentals. Motors must not exceed 8 HP and no live bait fishing is permitted.

Lewis Canyon Campground is located in a beautiful ponderosa pine setting with a large open field nearby. Wild turkeys, elk and deer are often seen nearby. The trailhead to the Juniper Ridge Trail #640 is located at the group campground. This trail is open to non-motorized vehicles; hikers, horses and mountain bicycles. The trail is a pleasant 14 mile loop through ponderosa pines, juniper and manzanita county. A shorter 7 mile loop trail is also marked. Capacity of campground is 150 people.

Scott Reservoir Campground
Situated near Scott Reservoir, Scott Reservoir Campground has only modest developments but is very popular throughout the summer. Camping and picnicking is allowed along the lakeshore and surrounding area. A variety of fish species including; Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Channel Cat, Large Mouth Bass, Green Sunfish, Blue Gill, Black Bull Head, and Carp can be found in Scott Reservoir.

Petrified Forest National Park is a nice day trip for those traveling I-40 in northeastern Arizona. It features the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood as well as the multi-colored badlands of the Painted Desert.
